Energy incidents in 2026: the year so far, counted from the register

As of 2 November 2026, the register holds 574 published incidents at battery storage, solar, wind, grid and data centre sites dated 2026, against 177 for the same months of 2025. Most of that rise is the register, not the world: it widened in 2026 to take in substations, solar and wind at scale. Two technologies have been recorded the same way since 2024 and bear comparison: battery storage 27 (16 in the same months of 2025, 22 in the whole year); data centre 21 (13 in the same months of 2025, 18 in the whole year). Every figure on this page is counted from the published entries when the site is built and links to the incidents behind it.

By technology

Incidents by the year they happened. "Same months" is January to November of 2025, the fair comparison for a year in progress. An entry dated only to its year counts in the whole-year column and not in the same-months one. The change column is a change in what the register holds; for grid, solar and wind it mostly reflects wider recording from 2026, and only the battery storage and data centre rows compare like with like.

The major incidents of 2026

What is known about them

Of the 574 incidents dated 2026, the full record names the root cause for 342, the part that failed for 315 and the fire service response for 319; 16 carry a downtime and 2 a loss figure. The rest are still being reported, or were never reported in full: a first report is not a finding, and the register updates an entry when the cause is published. The full records are part of a membership; the public entry for every incident is free.

Reading these figures

  • This is a register of incidents reported in public, with sources, not a count of every incident that happened. An incident nobody reported is not here.
  • The register's own coverage grew in 2026: substations, solar and wind are recorded at a scale they were not in 2025. A rise in those rows is a rise in recording. Battery storage and data centres have been recorded the same way since 2024.
  • Reporting is uneven: the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia publish more than most countries, so they appear more often.
  • Recent months fill in late. An incident is often added weeks after it happened, when a source is published, so the current month's bar will rise.
  • Same-months comparisons are fairer than year against year while a year is in progress, and still move as late reports arrive.
  • Nothing here attributes an incident to a manufacturer, installer or operator. Companies appear in the full record where a source names them.

Sources and method

  • Counted from the 2,242 published entries of the Energy Incident Register when the site was built on 2 November 2026. Each entry links to its sources.
  • An incident is dated by the day it happened, not the day it was reported. The register's methodology sets out what is recorded and how severity is graded.
