Transformer blast kills three farmers in Bemetara field

What happened
A transformer exploded on 20 September 2026 in the Hemband Khar area of Mohtara village, Bemetara district, Chhattisgarh. Hot oil and flames from the transformer spread into a field where three farmers were working nearby. They suffered severe burns, were taken by villagers to Bemetara District Hospital, and were later referred to Raipur. All three died during treatment about five days later. The cause of the blast has not been reported.
Lessons learned
- A distribution transformer failure can throw hot oil and flame into nearby work areas, so field crews need a clear exclusion zone around live equipment.
- Rural sites should have a practised route for moving burn casualties to a hospital that can treat them.
