What happened
A powerful explosion occurred in an electricity transformer at the eighth cross of KTJ Nagar in Davanagere, India, according to a report by The Siasat Daily that cites CCTV footage. The blast was followed by a large burst of flames that engulfed an adjoining scrap shop and two vehicles. The fire then spread to the building above the shop and caused damage to nearby residential buildings. The loud explosion caused panic in the neighbourhood, and residents ran for safety.
Fire and emergency services took more than two hours to bring the blaze under control. The scrap shop and both vehicles were gutted, and the full extent of the damage had not been assessed when the report was published.
Contributing factors
The source does not report the cause of the transformer explosion. It does not state the transformer's ownership, age, rating or maintenance history.
Lessons learned
- Distribution transformers close to commercial premises, scrap yards and parked vehicles should be assessed for fire spread risk, with adequate clearances and firebreaks.
- Operators should inspect transformers for oil leakage, overheating and protection faults, as these can precede a violent failure.
- Local emergency plans should cover fires at street-side substations, including early isolation of supply, coordination with the fire service and warning of nearby residents.
