What happened
According to urbanacres.in, which cites a Sanmarg (Kolkata) report, a transformer caught fire on a Friday in the Panditpara area of Chakchatta, under the Kalitala Asuti police station limits in South 24 Parganas, India. The report says the fire sent flames and thick smoke into the locality and caused panic among residents. Local people alerted the fire department. Two fire engines and several firefighters attended and firefighters worked for several hours before bringing the fire under control.
The report states that no casualties were reported. It does not establish the cause of the fire and does not say whether electricity supply was disrupted, whether the transformer was damaged or replaced, or whether the distribution authority has begun a technical inspection.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire has not been established. The report notes that the proximity of homes and the density of the area can affect emergency access and response operations.
Lessons learned
- Distribution transformers in densely built areas should be inspected for overheating, oil leaks and deteriorated connections.
- Utilities should plan emergency access and share transformer locations with fire services in residential areas.
- Operators should publish the cause and any corrective action after a transformer fire.
