Transformer fire at Old RPH power station causes outage in Kanpur

What happened

On 29 January 2026, a fire broke out in a 10 MVA power transformer at Old RPH power station in Kanpur, India. The Times of India reported that the transformer burst into flames, causing panic nearby and a power outage in several areas of the city. Power station staff used fire safety equipment, and a fire department team attended. No casualties were reported. The loss to KESCO was estimated at about Rs 90 lakh. Repair work was under way, and supply to limited areas was being restored through alternative arrangements. An investigation was ordered. The cause was not reported.
