Around 1 am on Wednesday 21 October 2026, according to a report published on 22 October, an unidentified person set fire to rubbish lying on a road near the Maharaja Doodh Dairy in the Nazirabad police station area of Kanpur, close to the Ashok Nagar petrol pump. The flames spread to a nearby electricity pole, which burned. Passers-by phoned the electricity substation, which cut the supply, and tried to put out the fire with mud and water.

Smoke entered nearby homes and residents came out onto the street, and the fire spread to banners and posters in the area. Police from the Ashok Nagar police post helped residents put out the fire with buckets of water. The report says the fire was brought under control after about half an hour. The report describes the incident as a major disaster averted.

Someone lit rubbish on the road next to a utility pole. The report does not say whether this was deliberate. The report does not say whether the pole was damaged beyond repair or whether the wider network was affected.

  1. Rubbish should not be left or burned near overhead line supports, and councils and police can act on illegal burning close to electrical assets.
  2. Operators should give the public a clear reporting route to the substation so that supply can be isolated quickly when a pole is involved in a fire.
  3. In this report, members of the public phoning the substation to cut supply was the step that made the fire safer to fight.
