What happened
The Corporación del Fondo del Seguro del Estado (CFSE), Puerto Rico's state insurance fund, reported that an explosion at an electrical substation caused a power interruption affecting its Ponce regional operations. The source does not say where the substation is, when the explosion occurred, how many workers were hurt, or which utility owns or operates it. Appointments for injured workers were to be rescheduled, and staff were contacting each affected worker directly.
Workers needing emergency medical care could attend the Hospital Industrial while service was restored. The Guayama and Mayagüez regions remained available to those affected. CFSE said it would announce restoration of services in Ponce through its official channels.
Lessons learned
- Substation failures can have knock-on effects on public services that depend on the same supply, so operators and their customers should map which critical services rely on each substation.
- Organisations that serve injured people should keep backup sites, direct-contact procedures and rescheduling plans ready for when local power fails.
- Emergency care routes and online service channels should stay usable during outages, and operators should tell affected customers quickly how restoration will be announced.
