What happened
Early on Monday morning, 26 October 2026, a short circuit in the wires on an electricity pole in B-Block of Shalimar Garden Extension-2, Sahibabad, in Ghaziabad, set the wires on fire. A local organiser reported that the fire started at about 4:30 am. The fire brigade was called and reached the site, bringing the fire under control in good time. The source says no major accident occurred. The local power utility's chief engineer said its team repaired the wire and that supply was being restored normally. According to the same account, a fire had earlier broken out on a pole in front of house B-112 in the same area.
Contributing factors
According to a local organiser, internet and Wi-Fi cables from several companies, plastic boxes and advertising boards have been fixed to the poles in an unplanned way, which they say raises the risk of short circuits and fires. The source does not confirm that these attachments caused this fire.
Lessons learned
- Audit third-party cables, junction boxes and signage fixed to distribution poles, and remove any that are unauthorised or poorly installed.
- Require permits and inspection before telecoms or advertising equipment is attached to utility poles.
- Record repeat fires at the same pole location and inspect that pole and its attachments before a larger failure occurs.
