What happened
On Tuesday 27 October 2026, a failure on the national power grid cut electricity in eastern Dhaka and parts of Chattogram at around 12.45 pm, according to Prothom Alo English. Several power plants shut down following the grid failure and began restarting one by one about two hours later, and supply then increased gradually. Power Grid PLC said engineers were restoring connections in stages, and that the national grid was operating under the control of the National Load Despatch Centre.
The company also said electricity supply in the northern region and other parts of the country remained operational and normal. Power Grid PLC then formed a five-member investigation committee to identify the actual cause and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence, with its report due within five working days. The article also recalled earlier national grid failures on 4 October 2022 and 1 November 2014.
Contributing factors
The cause had not been determined when the source was published. An investigation committee has been formed to establish it.
Lessons learned
- Grid operators should maintain staged restoration procedures so that power plants and load can be reconnected in a controlled sequence after a wide-area trip.
- Where a grid failure shuts down generation, restart sequencing and communication with the public should be rehearsed in advance, because supply recovery took several hours.
- Independent investigations with a short, fixed reporting deadline help identify root causes and recurrence controls after major grid failures.
