What happened
A fire broke out at the Power Ulan Power Substation of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) near the Rampura Metropolitan Project area in Dhaka. The 133/32 kV substation on Wapda Road caught fire at about 7:20 am on a Monday. The Fire Service Control Room dispatched five units, which brought the fire under control within an hour and extinguished it at about 8:30 am. No casualties were reported.
Local residents said the fire caused an outage in the Metropolitan Project and nearby areas. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are under investigation. DPDC had not commented when the report was published. The same substation had suffered an earlier fire in April 2020, which burnt a 35/56 kV power point and disrupted supply for some time.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation by the Fire Service.
Lessons learned
- Substations with a prior fire history should be inspected for recurring faults in switchgear and power points, and the findings recorded.
- Several fire service units dispatched at once brought this substation fire under control within an hour, according to the Fire Service.
- Operators should plan for localised outages during substation fires, and keep public and local communication channels ready, since the operator had not commented at the time of reporting.
