A transformer in Macul, a commune of Santiago, Chile, exploded on or before 25 May 2023. Footage posted on TikTok on that date shows the transformer sparking, followed by a larger explosion. A diagonal beam of light visible in the video was assessed by Lead Stories as a camera lens flare or an edited effect, not a laser or directed energy weapon. The original poster's caption said that a friend in his apartment in Macul lost power and heard an explosion.

The Chilean programme CHV Noticias published a segment about the footage on YouTube on about 29 May 2023 and visited the site. The fact-checking service Lead Stories reviewed the footage. No injuries or damage were reported in the sources reviewed.

A Chilean electrical engineering academic quoted by CHV Noticias said that trees moving from their original position can interact with overhead electrical networks, and that a branch most likely touched one or two conductors in the area. The news report described transformer explosions of this kind as not unusual on a windy day. No official investigation finding was cited.

  1. Vegetation near overhead distribution lines can contact conductors, especially in high winds, so clearance inspections and pruning schedules should be reviewed after storms.
  2. Transformers can show visible sparking before a larger explosion, so early reports of arcing should prompt inspection.
  3. Incidents captured on public video can attract false attributions, so operators should prepare a clear, factual public statement early.
