A grass fire of roughly 1.5 hectares broke out in the Pirque commune near Camino San Vicente de Macul and Camino Los Quillayes. Volunteers from the Puente Alto and Pirque fire services, national forestry agency CONAF, municipal public safety staff and police attended. The fire burned grass, trees and shrubs and posed a risk of spreading to neighbouring land. Crews cut a firebreak, confined the perimeter and extinguished the fire, though two flare-ups occurred outside the contained area.

A preliminary municipal assessment reportedly said the fire started in the solar panel sector while pruning work was under way there. The source does not say whether any solar equipment was damaged. No injuries or arrests were reported. The official cause has not been confirmed and is subject to investigation.

The preliminary municipal assessment points to pruning work in the solar panel sector and a lack of grass maintenance, with a possible incandescent element igniting dry vegetation. The source says the definitive causes will be set by the investigation. The source also notes abundant dry vegetation in the sector, which it says favoured rapid spread.

  1. Hot work and cutting or pruning near solar arrays should follow a permit that includes fire watch and checks for incandescent material.
  2. Vegetation under and around solar arrays should be kept short and cleared on a set schedule, especially in dry seasons.
  3. Firebreaks and access routes around solar sites should be maintained so that fire crews can contain a grass fire quickly.
  4. Contractors carrying out vegetation work should be briefed on the fire risk specific to the site.
