What happened
In the early hours of 30 January 2022, Equinix security systems detected smoke from a power room at the company's MD2 data centre in Alcobendas, Madrid. The Madrid emergency service sent seven fire crews to a small fire in a basement area where transformers are located, on Calle de Valgrande. The company said the fire was contained to the power room and swiftly extinguished, with no injuries. Firefighters ventilated the building and did not affect the main floors.
Equinix reported a brief interruption in power supply only. Data Center Dynamics reported no signs of customer service outages. Police and an ambulance also attended. The company said a full investigation into the cause was under way.
Contributing factors
The cause was not reported. Equinix said a full investigation was being made.
Lessons learned
- Treat smoke detection in a data centre power room as a trigger for an immediate emergency response.
- Plan so that smoke from a basement plant area can be contained and ventilated without affecting occupied floors.
- After a contained power-room fire, confirm whether a brief supply interruption reached customers and record that outcome.
