Fire at Digicel data centre power plant in Haiti

2018Published 2 Oct 2026

Early on Sunday 26 August 2018, a fire was reported in the power plant that feeds the Digicel data centre in Haiti. Some customer internet and phone services were affected. Digicel said the fire was brought under control with help from firefighters from Pétion-Ville, that a backup generator had been installed so affected services could resume, and that technicians were working to restore full service. The cause, the extent of damage and whether service was fully restored are not reported.

Not reported.

  1. A fire in the power plant that feeds a data centre can interrupt customer internet and voice services even when the data hall itself is not reported as involved.
  2. A ready backup generator and a clear restoration plan can limit how long those services stay down.
  3. Early coordination with the local fire service helps bring a power-plant fire under control so recovery can start.
