Aug 2026Published 3 Oct 2026
What happened
The University of Lagos temporarily shut down one of its data centres after an early-morning fire at the facility on 10 August 2026. The institution said the shutdown was to allow safety assessments, technical inspections, repairs and other remedial works. Internet connectivity and some other e-services were to remain unavailable until the affected infrastructure had been assessed and it was safe to restore them. The university said it was working with technical teams to restore services as soon as possible, and that further updates would be issued through official channels. No injuries, cause or extent of damage were reported.
Lessons learned
- After a fire at a data centre, keep the affected facility shut until safety assessments and technical inspections are complete.
- Plan for loss of connectivity and related services while damaged infrastructure is assessed.
- Restore services only when it is safe to do so, and keep users informed through official channels.
