Line tripping at Egbin substation disrupts power supply

What happened

At about 2:47 p.m. on 5 August 2024 a heavy system surge caused arcing on the Benin-Egbin 330kV line isolator fingers at the Egbin Transmission Substation switchyard. The resulting line tripping affected outgoing lines from the substation and led to loss of supply to some areas. The Transmission Company of Nigeria stated that the event did not constitute a national grid collapse. Power supply was restored to affected areas by 6:10 p.m. the same day after the line tripping was rectified.
