Faulty transformer reported to cause repeated rain-related outages in Yaba

2025Published 1 Oct 2026

Residents of Oyadiran estate in the Sabo area of Yaba told Vanguard News that a community transformer fails when it rains, cutting power for days at a time. They also reported sparks and noise from the transformer during rainfall. They said the distribution company, which they named as EKEDC, has made temporary repairs and that the outages return with further rain. No injury, fire or explosion is reported, and no single incident date is given.

Residents attribute the outages to a faulty, ageing transformer that they say has been repaired rather than replaced. The distribution company has not confirmed a cause in this report.

  1. Repeated weather-related transformer trips should be treated as a recurring fault, not a one-off repair.
  2. Operators should check assets that fail in rain before the wet season, and record what was found.
  3. Reports of sparks or noise from a transformer near homes should be escalated and the outcome told to residents.
