What happened
On 1 April 2026, Bahrain's interior minister said the defence force was extinguishing a fire at a company facility as a result of what the minister called Iranian aggression, without naming the company. Data Center Dynamics, citing a Financial Times report and a person familiar with the matter, reported that the facility was an Amazon Web Services data centre in Bahrain. AWS declined to comment. It is not reported what equipment burned, whether anyone was hurt, or how services were affected. The same report refers to earlier attacks on AWS data centres in the UAE and Bahrain, which are separate from this event.
Contributing factors
The public account links the fire to an external attack in the Iran-US conflict. That link, and the identification of the site as AWS, rest on a single report and have not been confirmed by the operator.
Lessons learned
- Operators in conflict zones should keep physical protection and emergency response plans current.
- Redundancy and customer communication plans should be ready before an external threat materialises.
- Public statements should distinguish what an authority has confirmed from what is only alleged.
