In the early hours of 12 October 2026, at about 01:45, a fire broke out at the El Algar electrical substation in Alicante province, Spain. The substation supplies drinking water to several municipalities in the Marina Baixa comarca. The fire damaged the 10 MW transformer and adjoining installations, including cabling that also needs to be replaced. The Consorcio de Aguas reported no personal injuries. It said supply to the municipalities is guaranteed through a spare transformer it holds in reserve.

Fitting that unit requires specific coupling work and replacement of the damaged cabling, and a minimum outage of five days was estimated. Repair of the damaged transformer as a parallel route was estimated to take at least two months, so the swap to the reserve unit is the quicker option. The extent of the material damage was still being assessed at the time of reporting.

The source does not state the cause of the fire. The transformer is described as large and requiring special intervention to replace, and the fire also affected adjoining cabling.

  1. Operators of critical water supply substations should hold a spare large transformer or a pre-agreed rapid-replacement plan, as a swap can restore service far sooner than repairing a damaged unit.
  2. Ancillary cabling and systems beside a main transformer can be damaged in the same fire, so their condition should be assessed as part of the recovery plan.
  3. Recovery plans should compare parallel options, since repair of a large transformer can take months longer than fitting a reserve unit.
