Transformer fire cuts power to thousands in South Tenerife

A piece of electricity network equipment, believed to be a transformer, caught fire in Guargacho, South Tenerife, within the municipality of Arona, shortly after 7.30pm on a Thursday evening. The fire destroyed the equipment and cut power to thousands of homes in the lower part of the town, while residents in the upper area were unaffected. Firefighters from Las Chafiras, along with Local Police and Guardia Civil, attended the scene but could not tackle the blaze until electricity company engineers disconnected the supply and confirmed it was safe to do so. The fire burned until after 11.30pm, with nearby streets closed during the response. The local medical centre was temporarily closed due to the outage, with patients redirected to a health centre in Las Chafiras. Work began afterwards to install a new transformer and restore supply.

Officials believe insulating oil inside the transformer caught fire, contributing to the intensity of the blaze. The precise cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
