A fire broke out on 25 July 2026 at the electricity substation that supplies Don Benito, a town in Extremadura, Spain. The fire caused significant damage to the installations. Supply was restored, but not all the backup systems and alternative feed arrangements the operator normally uses in the event of a fault could be re-established. On the nights of Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October 2026 the town suffered two power cuts.

The operator, Grupo Félix González, says the network does not yet run in its usual configuration, which limits its ability to respond to further faults and forces it to use temporary solutions while damaged equipment is replaced. The company estimates that full recovery will take several months, partly because some materials depend on manufacture and delivery, and it does not rule out further outages in the meantime. The company denies that the problems result from a lack of maintenance or investment and proposes a second transformer substation for the town, which it says has been in its investment plan since 2022 but would not be an immediate solution.

The source reports that the fire damaged substation installations and reduced the backup and alternative supply capacity normally used during faults. The operator says the network is not yet in its usual configuration. The operator denies that a lack of maintenance or investment was a factor. The cause of the July fire, the extent of the damage and the number of customers affected are not reported.

  1. After a substation fire, restore full backup and alternative feed arrangements as a priority, and track how long the network runs in a degraded configuration.
  2. Hold strategic spares or framework supply agreements for transformers and switchgear, because lead times for replacement equipment can extend recovery by months.
  3. Where a single substation supplies a town, assess N-1 resilience and plan a second feed before a loss occurs, since new substations need land, permits and planning time.
