What happened
A fire broke out at the Novaya substation in Makhachkala, Daghestan, on a Saturday morning. Officials said a technical failure followed overloaded power lines, damaging 23 cable lines and leaving more than 86,500 residents without electricity. More than 45 emergency teams, with 159 workers and 71 units of equipment, were sent to the site. Authorities said power had been restored to nearly half of those affected and later reported that full supply had been reinstated, while repair work to replace damaged cables continued.
Contributing factors
Officials said overloaded power lines caused the technical failure. The regional prime minister said the energy system had been overloaded beyond capacity six times in the previous two weeks, and that 199 emergency power cuts occurred in the republic from 1 to 24 July, 75 of them in Makhachkala. The report also describes ageing infrastructure, high household demand and repeated outages, but does not independently establish those as the cause of this fire.
Lessons learned
- Monitor and manage grid loading against actual capacity during peak demand.
- Replace ageing cables and substation equipment before repeated overloads become failures.
- Keep affected communities informed while repairs continue after supply is reported restored.
