Blown transformer causes fire and outage at Hartford library and city hall

What happened
On 17 June 2025, firefighters were called to the Hartford Public Library on Main Street just after 9:30 a.m. after smoke was reported in the basement following a loud explosion. They found a fire in the library's electric vault. Crews coordinated with the power company to de-energise the equipment, then put the fire out with CO2 extinguishers. The incident was brought under control just before 10:45 a.m., leaving the library and City Hall without power.
City officials later said a city-owned transformer in the basement of one of the buildings had blown and started the fire. They had first said, incorrectly, that the transformer belonged to the power company. The power company said an investigation found that customer-owned equipment had failed, and that its own transformers were not on fire and remained operational.
Contributing factors
The power company said customer-owned equipment failed. The precise failure mode was not reported. Early statements about who owned the transformer were later corrected.
Lessons learned
- Keep clear records of who owns and is responsible for transformers on customer premises.
- Coordinate quickly between fire services and the utility when customer-owned equipment fails, including de-energising before firefighting.
- Check ownership promptly after an incident so response and public statements are not based on a wrong assumption.
