Ukrinform reported that an electrical substation caught fire after an explosion in Stary Oskol, Belgorod region, on 18 January 2024. The report relayed a Telegram post by an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, which described unmanned aerial vehicle sounds, an explosion and a burning substation. The same article noted that some cities in temporarily occupied Crimea lost electricity that day, including Kerch, Sevastopol and Simferopol. The report gave no operator, capacity, injuries, damage or official confirmation. The cause of the fire was not established. The account is a single unverified claim relayed in a news report and should be treated as provisional.

Not reported. The Telegram post linked the incident to unmanned aerial vehicle activity, but no cause was confirmed by any authority or operator.

  1. Substations in areas affected by conflict or unusual threats should have fire detection and remote alarms that report to a staffed control centre, so faults are seen even when staff cannot attend.
  2. Incident reports that rely on social media claims should be held as unverified until the operator or a competent authority confirms the cause.
  3. Grid operators should plan for regional supply loss, since one substation fault can cut power to several cities at once.
