What happened
A fire was reported inside the Francisco Pizarro photovoltaic plant, which lies between the municipal areas of Torrecillas de la Tiesa and Aldeacentenera in Extremadura, Spain. Pv magazine España reported in July 2025 that the plant is owned by Iberdrola, has an installed capacity of 590 MW, covers about 1,300 hectares and started operation in 2022. Infoex, the regional forest fire prevention and extinction service, extinguished the fire, with the SEPEI fire service also involved.
Iberdrola described the event as a minor fire (conato) affecting a very limited area, a description the operator gave and that has not been independently confirmed. The date of the fire, its origin and the extent of any damage have not been reported.
Contributing factors
The origin of the fire has not been reported. Iberdrola said its fire emergency plan was activated, using its own and third-party resources.
Lessons learned
- Vegetation management and firebreaks around large ground-mounted solar sites can limit the spread of fire within the site and into surrounding land.
- Operators should keep a site fire emergency plan with defined activation steps and agreed coordination with regional forest firefighting services.
- Giving local fire services prior information on access routes and plant layout can help them respond quickly.
