Transformer explodes on Bengaluru footpath, injuring two pedestrians

2026Published 7 Oct 2026Responsible editor: George, Chief Editor

Companies named in this entry: Amazon

A transformer box on a footpath outside Amazon’s office on Baglur Main Road in Bengaluru exploded, injuring two pedestrians. One suffered severe burns to the hands after falling in the blast, and the other sustained minor injuries. A student walking nearby was reported to have escaped unhurt. The blast was recorded on camera. The cause has not been reported. A separate transformer explosion in Bengaluru in 2022 killed two people.

The transformer was installed on a footpath used by pedestrians. The report questions whether such equipment is adequately secured and maintained, but it does not establish a cause.

  1. Avoid siting transformers on busy footpaths where pedestrians pass close to the equipment.
  2. Inspect and maintain street-level transformers so faults are found before a failure.
  3. Treat public exposure on walkways as a siting issue, not only an equipment issue.
