What happened
A fire occurred in the electrical sub-station in the basement of the Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, United States. More than 1,500 employees were evacuated. Power was lost to the on-site data centre used by the company and its dealers for sales reporting and tracking. Battery backups protected stored data but the data centre could not operate without full power. Remote facilities handled some load but sales data reporting was interrupted for most of the business day. The monthly sales report was delayed. The headquarters was already undergoing a major upgrade that includes a new data centre.
Lessons learned
- Ensure backup power arrangements allow continued operation of critical data systems during substation failures.
- Test failover to remote facilities before incidents occur.
- Coordinate data centre power resilience with site electrical infrastructure upgrades.
