Fire reported at DTE substation in downtown Detroit

Apr 2024Published 1 Oct 2026

Companies named in this entry: DTE Energy

Officials were reported to be investigating a fire that broke out on a Friday afternoon at a DTE Energy substation in downtown Detroit, in the 600 block of Howard Street near Third. City fire crews and DTE officials responded, and police blocked nearby ends of Howard. Staff at the Cambria Hotel next door were reported to have heard a loud boom and to have lost electricity in the building. DTE Energy said it shut off electricity at the facility for the safety of crews, first responders and people nearby, that service to nearby buildings was rerouted, and that no nearby outages were related to the incident. The cause, the extent of damage and whether anyone was injured were not reported.

  1. Isolate a substation fire and reroute supply where the network allows, so a local event does not become a wider outage.
  2. Coordinate the utility with the fire service and control access around the site while the cause is unknown.
  3. Treat an early report as incomplete until the operator and fire service confirm damage, injuries and cause.
