Koedoespoort substation fire disrupts power in Tshwane

June 2023Published 2 Oct 2026

A fire broke out at the Koedoespoort substation in East Lynne, east of Pretoria, on 16 June 2023. The blaze caused power outages in Queenswood, Moregloed, Kilner Park, East Lynne, Waverley and surrounding areas. Emergency services attended. Firefighters extinguished the fire and cooled the substation while utility services assessed the damage. Officials said a restoration timeline could not be given until that assessment was complete. A post included in the report said some routes had been closed.

The cause was suspected to be a veld fire. Officials said further investigation was needed to confirm the exact reason.

  1. Substations need protection against external fire risks such as nearby vegetation.
  2. A rapid emergency response can limit damage at electrical infrastructure.
  3. Clear communication on restoration timelines supports affected communities during outages.
