Transformer fire affects substation at Midvalley Megamall

May 2023Published 2 Oct 2026

An initial investigation by the Energy Commission found that a fire in the Midvalley Megamall main entrance substation room on 17 May 2023 was caused by a TX2 transformer which caught fire. The supply system fed from that substation was affected. The same initial investigation found that the cable system for the transformer at the substation was also affected because the cable was close to the fire.

The initial investigation linked cable damage to the cable being close to the fire. It did not report why the TX2 transformer caught fire.

  1. A fire in one transformer can interrupt the whole supply fed from that substation.
  2. Cables routed close to a transformer can be damaged by a nearby fire, so separation and protection of cable routes matter.
  3. Treat an initial official finding as preliminary until the full investigation is published.
