Substation fire destroys transformer, cuts power in Vanderbijlpark

A fire broke out at the Town substation in Vanderbijlpark on 23 February 2026, cutting electricity to hundreds of households across several areas including Bonanne, Bophelong, Bophelong extensions and CW1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and NW7 smallholdings. The fire was allegedly caused by overloading and/or technical faults. The municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality, stated that the 30 mVa transformer and associated cables were damaged beyond repair. Repair crews began rigging a standby transformer for testing, with restoration timelines to be communicated once testing was completed. Residents faced the prospect of being without power for days or possibly weeks. Political councillors criticised the municipality for poor maintenance, inadequate planning, and ageing infrastructure, calling for urgent communication of restoration timelines.
