Explosion damages Lunar substation in Lenasia

2024Published 1 Oct 2026

Companies named in this entry: City Power

City Power said an explosion caused extensive damage at the Lunar substation in Lenasia. Supply was off from 17 February 2024 and was reported restored on 25 February 2024 to Lenasia South, Finetown, Mountain View and surrounding areas. Teams replaced equipment, installed cables and carried out tests. On the morning of 25 February the incomer was still tripping; City Power later said that fault had been rectified. One distributor serving Magson Manor remained offline, which City Power attributed to cable theft and vandalism. The cause of the explosion was not reported.

The cause of the explosion was not reported. Cable theft and vandalism were cited only for the distributor that stayed offline.

  1. After substation damage, replacement, cable work and testing may all be needed before customers can be restored.
  2. An incomer that keeps tripping can delay restoration even after repair work has begun.
  3. Theft and vandalism can leave part of a network offline after the main supply returns, so cable and distributor security needs its own checks.
