Transformer explosion collapses building wall in Johannesburg, South Africa

Emergency services in New Doornfontein, Johannesburg, responded to a reported substation fire just before 6am. On arrival crews found the substation ablaze, and during the response an explosion occurred, causing a wall of an adjacent student residence building to collapse. Four people in the vicinity were injured, including one student and three security guards, all of whom sustained third-degree burns. They were transported by Gauteng Provincial Government ambulance services to nearby hospitals. Emergency services remained on site to check whether anyone was trapped under the rubble, awaiting heavy equipment to help clear debris. Nearby residents were accounted for. The matter was handed over to the local electricity utility, City Power, for further investigation. The cause of the explosion had not been determined at the time of reporting.
