What happened
Residents of Afaha Ubeh, on the outskirts of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, watched a fire at an electric power substation on a Thursday. Witnesses said the facility was alight for more than three hours before firefighters from Julius Berger arrived. The state fire service reached the scene later and then joined that effort. The Akwa Ibom State government said substantial damage to the facility would cause power outages in parts of the state, and asked the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to speed the repairs.
A reporter observed that most of Uyo had been without power for almost a day, but the source says it was unclear whether that wider outage was connected to the fire.
