Fire damages TCN substation in Birnin Kebbi

Sept 2023Published 2 Oct 2026

Companies named in this entry: Transmission Company of Nigeria

A fire broke out at the Transmission Company of Nigeria 330 kV transmission substation in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, on the night of 14 September 2023. The blaze was reported to have engulfed the facility and to have gutted critical power supply infrastructure at the Transmission Works Centre. Kaduna Electric said the incident caused power outages in parts of Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states, and that TCN was assessing the damage before repairs. The report said the fire came barely 24 hours after a national grid collapse linked to a separate fire outbreak. The cause of this fire was not reported.

  1. Substation operators should be ready to assess fire damage quickly so repairs can start.
  2. Distribution companies should tell affected customers the cause of an outage as soon as it is known.
  3. A second fire so soon after a grid event is a prompt to check whether nearby assets need extra watch, without assuming a shared cause.
