On Friday 15 April 2022, at about 15:15, a fire broke out at the Ayede transmission substation in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The fire affected one 150MVA 330/132kV power transformer. According to a TCN statement, the fire was curtailed, and power supply was restored to the substation at about 18:46 and subsequently to the affected areas the same day. TCN said it regretted any inconvenience to electricity consumers in the affected areas.

The ICIR reported the fire against a background of national grid collapses in March and April 2022 and recurring fires at TCN substations, which it said cause outages for businesses and households without alternative power supply.

The source does not state the cause of the fire.

  1. Transformers should have fire detection, alarms and automatic isolation so that a fault is contained quickly and does not spread to adjacent equipment.
  2. Operators should maintain insulating oil condition and carry out routine thermal and dissolved gas testing to identify developing faults before they cause fire.
  3. Substations should have pre-planned alternative supply routes and switching procedures so that affected customers can be restored quickly while a damaged transformer is out of service.
