Mechanical failure causes major substation fire and explosions in Edinburgh

A substation at Slater's Steps, off Holyrood Road in Edinburgh, suffered what ScottishPower described as its first ever mechanical failure at an Edinburgh substation, causing a major fire and a series of loud explosions. Thick, acrid smoke was produced as the plastic enclosure around the equipment burned. Thousands of people were evacuated from nearby offices and flats, and some eyewitnesses initially feared a terrorist attack due to the noise and smoke. More than 400 homes and businesses, including a nearby visitor attraction, lost power. The area was cordoned off for about four hours while police and fire services responded. A car parked beside the substation also caught fire. No injuries were reported. A new substation was installed at the site the following day, and a joint investigation by police and the fire service was launched to determine the cause.

ScottishPower stated the incident stemmed from a mechanical failure, described as highly unusual and the first of its kind at an Edinburgh substation; the cause of the failure itself was under investigation at the time of reporting.
