Transformer explosion sparks five small fires near Palo Alto golf course

An electrical transformer between a baseball field and the Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course exploded at about 11.15am, igniting a fire on the utility pole and along a path near the creek, according to fire officials. At about the same time, on the other side of the creek, the Menlo Park Fire Protection District responded to three further small fires near the Gardens neighbourhood and along the creek. Fire officials said all the fires were small and that no structures were damaged. The transformer that caught fire disrupted power to about 350 East Palo Alto residents. Emergency-alert applications initially showed an aircraft crash at the golf course, which fire officials said had not occurred.
