Wind turbine fire destroys nacelle and blade at Bulgana Green Power Hub, Victoria

A fire broke out in one of 56 Siemens Gamesa SG 3.4-132 turbines at the 194MW Bulgana Green Power Hub, operated and owned by Neoen, near Great Western, Victoria, which also hosts a 20MW Tesla battery storage system. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) attended overnight after the turbine's main body was reported alight, established safety zones and kept clear of the structure due to the fire risk from the height of the turbine. Neoen, as site operator, was contacted and the turbines were shut down. Several hours later a blade caught fire, detached and fell to the ground. The fire destroyed the nacelle and the blade. Energy Safe Victoria investigators and engineers attended the scene and, at the time of reporting, the cause of the fire remained unknown. No injuries were reported and the wind farm was taken offline pending investigation. The fire began at about 9.30pm on 28 May 2025. Seven Country Fire Authority units from the Ararat, Stawell and Great Western brigades attended, and crews were recalled at about 3.20am when the blade caught fire, detached and fell.

The cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of reporting; Energy Safe Victoria stated the cause was still unknown while its investigators and engineers were on site.

1. Fire response plans for wind turbines should account for the risk of burning blades detaching and falling, and establish exclusion zones accordingly.
2. Site operators should have clear protocols for rapid shutdown and handover between fire authorities and site owners during an evolving turbine fire.
3. Co-located assets such as battery storage systems should have independent safety monitoring so that an incident on one asset type does not delay detection of issues elsewhere on site.
