Substation reactor fire in Southern Brazil triggers nationwide blackout

A fire occurred in a reactor at a transmission substation in Southern Brazil, part of a grid network associated with Eletrobras, causing the facility to shut down and the region to disconnect from the wider system. The affected region had been exporting a significant volume of power to other parts of the network. Automatic protection systems activated elsewhere to rebalance the grid following the disturbance, causing load interruptions in several regions. In total, around 10,000 megawatts of load were shed and more than one million consumers were affected by outages. The system operator reported that equipment restoration and load recovery began within minutes, with all affected loads restored within approximately two and a half hours. Authorities described the event as an isolated infrastructure failure rather than a supply shortage, and stated that an investigation into the root cause was under way.
