On Wednesday 25 June 2025, an explosion followed by a fire occurred at a power substation on the Pici Campus of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Fortaleza, Ceará. The incident frightened students, staff and nearby residents. The substation is next to a health centre, which suspended services as a safety measure. The problem caused momentary oscillations and affected power distribution across the campus. There was also a power outage for some customers of the distributor, Enel-CE, which sent teams to assist affected areas.

The UFC Infrastructure Superintendence said power at the institution was restored around 20:00 and confirmed that no one was injured. The Ceará Military Fire Department (CBMCE) initially received a report of a possible aircraft crash because of the noise and smoke, but that hypothesis was discarded. The fire service attended, remained on site through the day and monitored the area while repair and inspection work was carried out.

Enel-CE reported that the explosion was caused by an internal defect in the equipment, and said that equipment was the responsibility of the university. No independent investigation is reported in the source.

  1. On shared or institutional sites, operators and site owners should keep a clear record of who owns and maintains substation equipment, so that reported defects have an identified party to act on them.
  2. Campus and other multi-user sites should inspect substation equipment on a planned basis and treat unexplained noise, smoke or oscillations as warning signs.
  3. Facilities next to substations, including health services, should have a documented plan for suspending services and keeping people safe during a fire and a power loss.
