What happened
On the night of Saturday 7 November 2026, a fire followed by a strong explosion was reported at an Âmbar Energia substation on Rua Wilkens de Matos in the Aparecida district of Manaus, Brazil, according to Portal do Zacarias. Residents living nearby told the outlet that the blast was strong enough to make their homes shake and frightened families in the area. Residents also said the fire started within the substation installations.
Residents in several neighbourhoods also reported power cuts. No official confirmation was available of which areas were affected, how many customers lost supply, or whether the outages were linked to the substation incident, and no restoration time had been given. The report says there was no confirmation of injuries or of the extent of damage. Residents said a similar incident had occurred at the substation before, but the report does not verify this.
Contributing factors
Not reported. As of publication, Âmbar Energia had not given an explanation of the cause of the fire or explosion.
Lessons learned
- Operators of substations near residential areas should review fire and explosion risk assessments, including equipment condition, and share the findings with nearby communities.
- Where residents report repeated incidents at the same site, operators should investigate recurring causes and publish their findings rather than wait for a single event to prompt review.
- Operators should give timely public updates after a fire or explosion at grid infrastructure, covering the safety of nearby residents, the extent of any power loss and the expected restoration time.
