Underground transformer explosion causes outage in Santa Barbara

An electrical transformer in an underground vault exploded on a Thursday night, leaving parts of downtown Santa Barbara without power. Firefighters were sent to the vault at Anacapa Street and Cota Street. No injuries were reported. Two nearby vehicles were damaged. Southern California Edison crews were on the scene assessing the situation and planning repairs. There was no estimate of when power would be restored to the 1,532 customers affected.
The cause of the explosion was not reported.
