Wind turbine destroyed by fire near Breadalbane

What happened

A wind turbine caught fire at 6am and burned for several hours before going out by itself just before 11am. The rotor hub and one blade were ablaze about 90 metres above the ground, just off the Hume Highway near Breadalbane in New South Wales. Fire crews attended but could not reach the fire and instead watched the ground for spot fires, of which none were reported. Power to the structure was isolated. No properties were reported threatened, and no immediate cause was identified. The turbine was handed back to the operator.

Lessons learned

1. High turbine fires may have to be left to burn out when crews cannot reach them safely.
2. Ground crews should watch for secondary grass or spot fires.
3. Operators should isolate power promptly and agree access limits with the fire service.
