Battery room fire at solar-plus-storage site in Iksan-si, South Korea

A fire broke out in the battery energy storage system room of a solar power facility in Eoryang-ri, Mangseong-myeon, Iksan-si, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, in the early afternoon. Fire crews brought the visible flames under control within about 40 minutes, but the battery fire continued to smoulder and took several more hours to fully extinguish, with full suppression achieved late that night. No injuries were reported. Around 60 square metres of the ESS room were burned, and local fire authorities estimated the property loss at roughly 200 million Korean won. The cause of the fire was under investigation by fire and electrical safety authorities at the time of reporting, with battery manufacturer Samsung SDI stating that while the fire originated in the battery area, the underlying cause could lie elsewhere in the integrated system.
