Fire destroys battery storage building at solar site in Daesan-eup, Seosan-si

In June 2025, a fire broke out during the afternoon in the battery energy storage room of a solar photovoltaic generation site at Gi-eun-ri, Daesan-eup, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. The single storey storage building, constructed with sandwich panel walls and a panel roof, was destroyed, and part of the adjacent solar array was also burned. The fire service attended with tens of personnel and multiple pump, command and chemical response vehicles, and the fire was reported as fully extinguished after roughly ten and a half hours, continuing through the night. No injuries were reported and the fire did not spread to nearby homes. The ignition point and cause remained under investigation by the fire authorities at the time of reporting.

Not reported. The reporting outlet noted that lithium-ion chemistry can contribute to high temperature and arc related escalation, but no specific cause had been confirmed at the time of publication.

  1. Where battery storage is co-located with a solar array, review the construction of the storage building and favour non-combustible or fire rated wall and roof systems over combustible sandwich panel construction.
  2. Set and check separation distances between the storage building and adjacent arrays, inverters and cabling, so that a total loss of the building does not propagate into generation assets.
  3. Pre-plan with the local fire service for a long duration incident, covering access routes, sustained water supply, appropriate media and the decision to protect exposures rather than attempt internal firefighting.
  4. Confirm that boundary separation to neighbouring dwellings and structures is documented in the site emergency plan and rehearsed with responders.
  5. Preserve evidence for forensic determination of the ignition point and failure mode, and share the findings with the wider industry once the investigation concludes.
