Lessons learned
- Rooftop PV systems on schools, nurseries and other buildings where large numbers of people gather need regular inspection of DC cabling, connectors, combiner boxes and inverters, as these are common points of electrical fault.
- Evacuation plans for childcare and education sites should cover fires that start on roof-mounted electrical equipment, and drills should be practised so that the whole building can be cleared quickly, as happened here with no casualties.
- Operators of buildings with rooftop solar should give fire services clear information on how to isolate the array and where its shutoff points are, so that firefighting can proceed safely.
