What happened
A transformer caught fire at the Cattenom nuclear power plant in France on a Tuesday afternoon, shortly after 5pm, near reactor 3. According to an official statement, an automatic extinguishing system brought the flames quickly under control. Fire crews from Thionville, Hayange and Sierck-les-Bains attended with six vehicles. No injuries were reported. Officials said no radioactivity was released because the transformer sits outside the nuclear zone of the facility, and that there was no risk to the general population. The cause is under investigation.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of reporting and is under investigation.
Lessons learned
- Fit and test automatic extinguishing systems on transformers, since they can control a fire before fire crews arrive.
- Keep transformers outside nuclear or other safety-critical zones where practical, so that a fire there does not threaten containment or safety systems.
- Report promptly to the public and local authorities that no release or risk to the population has occurred, once confirmed.
