What happened
At around 4:03pm on 12 November 2018, a fire broke out at a solar power facility in Mokcheon-eup, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan-si, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. The fire involved the site's energy storage room and destroyed 187 lithium-ion battery units. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within approximately two hours. There were no injuries or fatalities reported. Local fire authorities estimated property damage at approximately 154 million Korean won. At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the fire remained under investigation by the fire department.
The battery energy storage system, which supported solar integration at the site, had a capacity of 1.2 MWh and had been in operation for under a year prior to the incident.
