What happened
On Wednesday 22 June 2022, at about 15:30 CEST, road construction work damaged the power grid in Dusseldorf-Unterrath, causing a district-wide power cut. The data centre's emergency generator took over the site load, but according to the operator's status page it caught fire and was shut down at about 16:10. From that point the whole Dusseldorf location was offline. The operator brought in a replacement generator and expected power to return in the evening.
Systems were restarted in stages during the night, and the operator reported that almost all servers were running again. Some cloud servers needed manual restarts or support tickets. The operator later marked the fault as resolved and said a detailed incident report would follow. A customer forum reported a large fire brigade response, which the operator's status page does not confirm.
Contributing factors
Road construction work damaged the grid supply in the district. The operator suspected a fault in the emergency generator system, but the sources do not state why the generator caught fire. The sources do not say whether the site had redundant generator capacity.
Lessons learned
- Test and maintain standby generators under load, and check protection systems for generator faults, so that a single generator failure does not cause a full site outage.
- Rehearse replacement generator deployment and load transfer in advance, so that a grid outage combined with a generator fault can be recovered quickly.
- Keep customers informed through a status page with timed updates, and publish a detailed incident report afterwards.
